About this Funding

National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Program know as The NSF SBIR/STTR Program is America’s Seed Fund, provides non-dilutive funding to innovative U.S. startups developing breakthrough technologies with strong commercial potential. Backed by the National Science Foundation, the program supports early-stage research and development across sectors including artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, advanced software, biotechnology, clean technology, and deep tech.

Funding is awarded in phases, allowing startups to validate technical feasibility, build prototypes, advance product development, and prepare for commercialization without giving up equity. The program is designed for companies tackling significant technical challenges and creating novel intellectual property with the potential for large-scale economic impact.

Funding Amount

  • Phase I: Up to $305,000
  • Phase II: Up to $1.25 million
  • Fast-Track: Up to $1.555 million

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S.-registered, for-profit small business.
  • Have fewer than 500 employees.
  • Conduct the majority of research and development activities within the United States.
  • Be developing an innovative technology with significant technical risk and commercialization potential.
  • Demonstrate a clear path to market and business growth.
  • Submit a Project Pitch prior to a full proposal application.
  • Meet all NSF SBIR/STTR program requirements at the time of application.

Application Process

  1. Submit a Project Pitch to NSF.
